How Ultherapy Works
What to Expect During a Treatment Session
Sessions are performed in-office and typically take anywhere from 30 minutes to over an hour, depending on how much area is being treated. A trained provider will cleanse the treatment area and apply an ultrasound gel, then use a handheld device to deliver the energy to targeted depths beneath the skin. Most people describe the sensation as brief warmth or tingling as the energy reaches the treatment layer; comfort levels vary from person to person, and your provider can talk through options to help keep you comfortable throughout.
There's no cutting, no needles, and generally no need to take time off afterward — many people go straight back to work or errands the same day.
Safety, Candidacy, and Preparing for Your Visit
Ultherapy is a non-invasive, FDA-cleared treatment, but as with any cosmetic procedure, it isn't the right fit for everyone. During your consultation, your provider will review your skin, your goals, and your health history to help determine whether Ultherapy — or a different treatment entirely — makes the most sense for you. It's not typically recommended for open wounds, active skin infections in the treatment area, or for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and your provider will walk through any other considerations specific to your situation.
Before your appointment, it's a good idea to arrive with clean skin, free of makeup or lotion in the treatment area, and to share your full medical history and any medications or supplements you're taking. Your provider can also help set realistic expectations — Ultherapy is designed to improve skin tone and firmness, not to replicate the results of a surgical facelift.
Aftercare and When You'll See Results
One of the appeals of Ultherapy is how little aftercare it requires. Mild redness, swelling, or tingling in the treated area is common in the hours after treatment and usually resolves on its own. There are no special bandages or restricted activities in most cases, though your provider will give you personalized guidance based on your skin and treatment plan.
Because Ultherapy works by encouraging your body's own collagen renewal, visible improvement tends to build gradually — many people start noticing changes over one to three months, with continued improvement for up to six months as new collagen forms. Some people benefit from a single session, while others opt for a follow-up treatment down the line to maintain or build on results; your provider can help you decide what makes sense for your skin and goals.
